Handshake Across the Border Emphasizes Peace and Friendship
Hundreds of participants met at the border between the United States and Canada on August 8th to shake hands across the 49th parallel in a demonstration of international friendship. The annual event at the International Peace Garden provides a powerful reminder of the foundation of the Garden – the pledge of peace and cooperation between two nations.
“The Handshake Across the Border keeps getting bigger and bigger,” said Tim Chapman, CEO of the International Peace Garden. “People want to be a part of it and come together to honor the commitment to peace that was founded here in 1932 and grows stronger every year. At a time when some global relationships seem uncertain, a simple handshake is a reminder of the long-standing friendship between the countries that share the longest international border in the world.”
The Handshake Across the Border was a highlight of the Garden’s Summer Floral Celebration, which also featured live music, songwriting workshops, folk dancing, a classic car show, special activities for kids, hands-on craft projects with a pollinator theme, and a variety of vendors offering food, arts and crafts.
